During grounding and maintenance operations on high-voltage transmission lines, conductor or earth-wire discharge often generates current surges, mechanical vibration and brief arcs at the pulley locations. If the grounding pulley is not properly designed, these effects can cause additional damage to the conductor and increase safety risks for personnel. This is a hidden pain point that European utilities pay close attention to.
On this Finnish project, to enhance the reliability and safety of grounding operations, the contractor installed 30 Grounding Roller Stringing Blocks for Pulley Block SHD660D at critical towers and work positions, complementing the SHSQN822D configuration. The SHD660D Grounding Roller Stringing Blocks feature a more robust roller structure and an optimized current path, helping to dissipate mechanical impact and localized current concentration when discharge and grounding currents pass through the system.
Field tests showed that when performing necessary discharge and grounding operations, the use of SHD660Dsignificantly reduced conductor vibration compared with previous setups. The mechanical noise and shaking of the pulleys were also lower. As a result, operators experienced a more stable working environment and felt more confident when handling grounding devices, which supports the implementation of standardized safety procedures.
From a project-wide perspective, the Finnish customer concluded that SHD660D Grounding Roller Stringing Blocksprovide an additional layer of protection in terms of grounding safety, conductor protection and operator comfort. Together with the CE-Marked Pilot Steel Wire Rope and SHSQN822D Grounding Roller Blocks, they form a safer and more reliable solution for stringing and grounding in high-voltage line construction. Based on this successful experience, the contractor plans to designate SHD660D as the preferred grounding pulley for key positions in future maintenance and expansion projects, further raising the overall safety level of transmission-line work in Finland.
